How Do People with a Demanding Personality Think?

Their working hypothesis is: “The worst thing that could happen to me is to be alone and without care and support, so I will do anything in order to keep people who matter to me. I must constantly make sure they are do not abandon me. If they do, I’ll pay them back.”

What about the Kids?

Some young children show this pattern early on and find it intolerable to be alone. They often engage in self-defeating behaviors in their inappropriate attempts to get classmates to be “my friend only.” They can become very cold, rejecting, and sometimes nasty if a friend, especially a “best friend,” enjoys the company of other kids in the class. Similarly, it is not uncommon for kids with this pattern to be overly possessive of a noncustodial parent after a divorce and become very unpleasant toward their parents’ potential or permanent new partners.
